In 1921 an act titled the Sheppard Towner Act was approved by Congress. It was a detailed state by state plan to eradicate maternal and infant mortality in the USA. If it was utilized in partnership with the 43,000+ black midwives who were active in the south at that time and allowed to organically blossom 🌸 without political bias and capitalist greed and medical industrialization of birth and misogyny and patriarchy and white superiority complex and miseducation of African science of medicine and racism, imagine how many mamas and babies and papas would have flourished. A personal note: This act was approved the year my maternal grandma was born in Alabama. Just years later, her mother died giving birth to her younger brother, and she was raised without a mother. “Imagine how many mamas and babies and papas would have flourished.” Hard not to wonder if my great grandma and great uncle might have been among them… 🙏🏾
